Stop Wasting Money on Google Ads Until You Fix These 5 Things (Garden Route Edition)
Garden Route businesses are collectively burning tens of thousands of rands on Google Ads every month — and most of it is wasted. If your website can't convert visitors, paid ads just burn cash faster. Here's what to fix BEFORE spending another cent.
# Stop Wasting Money on Google Ads Until You Fix These 5 Things
We see it constantly with Garden Route businesses: they throw R5,000-R15,000 per month at Google Ads, get clicks — and get almost nothing back.
The problem isn't Google Ads. The problem is what happens AFTER someone clicks your ad.
You're paying to bring people to a website that can't convert them. It's like buying a billboard that directs people to a locked door.
## Thing #1: Your Landing Page Is Your Homepage
This is the #1 Google Ads mistake in the Garden Route. You run an ad for "electrician George" and send people to your homepage — which has a slideshow, an "About Us" blurb, 6 service categories, and a generic contact form buried at the bottom.
The customer bounced. You paid R15-R40 for that click. Money gone.
Fix it: Create a dedicated landing page for each ad campaign. "Electrician in George" should go to a page specifically about electrical services in George — with one clear call-to-action.
## Thing #2: Your Website Is Slow
Google literally charges you more for slow websites. It's called Quality Score — Google grades your landing page, and slow pages get lower scores, which means higher cost-per-click.
We've seen Garden Route businesses paying 40% more per click than they should, purely because their website loads in 6 seconds instead of 2.
Fix it: Get your PageSpeed score above 80. This alone can reduce your cost-per-click by 20-30%.
## Thing #3: No Conversion Tracking
If you're running Google Ads without conversion tracking, you're driving blindfolded. You need to track:
- Phone calls from ads
- WhatsApp clicks from ads
- Form submissions from ads
- Which keywords generate actual leads (not just clicks)
Most Garden Route businesses we audit have zero conversion tracking. They know they're spending money. They have no idea if it's working.
Fix it: Set up Google Ads conversion tracking and link it to Google Analytics. Track calls, WhatsApp clicks, and form submissions as separate conversion actions.
## Thing #4: You're Targeting Too Broadly
"Plumber South Africa" is not a useful keyword for a George plumber. You'll get clicks from Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town — none of which become customers.
Fix it: Use location targeting (George + 30km radius) combined with location-specific keywords: - "plumber George" - "plumber Wilderness" - "emergency plumber Garden Route" - "geyser repair George Western Cape"
Add negative keywords to exclude irrelevant searches: "DIY," "course," "salary," "job," etc.
## Thing #5: Your Ad Copy Is Generic
"Professional service. Quality guaranteed. Contact us today."
This describes literally every business on earth. It gives the customer zero reason to click YOUR ad over the 3 other ads on the page.
Fix it: Be specific and local: - ❌ "Quality Plumbing Services — Contact Us" - ✅ "Burst Geyser in George? Fixed Today. R0 Callout Fee. 200+ 5-Star Reviews."
Mention George/Garden Route. Include a number (price, reviews, response time). Create urgency.
## The Right Order of Operations
Here's what we tell every Garden Route business owner:
1. First: Build a fast, conversion-optimised website 2. Second: Set up Google Business Profile 3. Third: Get organic SEO working (free traffic) 4. Fourth: THEN add Google Ads to pour fuel on the fire
If you skip steps 1-3 and go straight to Google Ads, you're lighting money on fire.
